Hello from South Bend, my lovely friends!
First of all, I miss you all tons. It is weird not having my people around, but I am slowly but surely getting used to it.
We finished our first week of classes and I am already swamped with homework, but everyone is so it’s okay. I really like all my professors so far, and everyone here is SO nice and fun. Last weekend was Welcome WeekeND (orientation, basically) so we had lots of activities–like DomerFest which was literally just a rave, and farmers markets and stuff. It was fun but honestly everyone was super nervous about starting actual school it felt a little drawn out.
The weather here is rough. It has been raining a lot (& when it rains it is RAINING, not like home). It isn’t too hot, but the humidity is insane. My dorm doesn’t have AC, so we have 5 fans going and the windows open at all times, and it’s still so toasty.
I was pretty anxious about the random roommate assignments, but it seems to have worked out well! One is a lacrosse player so we never see her–sometimes she doesn’t even come home to go to bed! (I like her when she is around though so it is still okay) The other two–Christina & Erin–are really nice. We just do things together because we don’t have any friends yet (LOL!). It’s funny because the halls here are basically Greek life & everyone is convinced that theirs is the best. Cavanaugh’s (my hall) brother hall is Zahm, which is the frat dorm that everyone loves to hate, but they throw great parties! We hear them every night from our room.
I must say, though, “Work hard, play hard” seems to be a common mindset here. During the day the library & student center are packed with students studying, but at night there are so many things to do. I’m sure since it’s only the first week this will die down once school picks up, but right now it’s pretty fun! (Also everyone is talking about football season & I think I need to do some studying on that but I’m SO pumped for it anyways!!)
I also really have been enjoying the religious atmosphere on campus. Faith seems to be an integral part of the community here which is pretty new for me compared to FSHA. My dorm has Mass with our priest in residence every Sunday, Monday, & Wednesday at 10pm, and everyone goes in their pajamas! Sometimes we even have sundaes on Sunday, for instance, or Mass & smoothies. I love that it is almost expected to have a strong faith here.
Final thoughts: Overall, I am loving it! I was pretty nervous about being so far from home, but so far my transition has been pretty smooth–although I must say I miss my dog & I miss sushi (the dining hall food sucks, I eat apple slices & peanut butter everyday)… I am having lots of fun & am confident that I made a good school choice.
Until next time, my friends. GO IRISH! ☘
P.S. I apologize for this lengthy post, there is just so much to say!!
